Into the Rift

The video work Into the Rift explores the rupture and rewriting of memory across media and temporal scales through images, text, and digital materials. The film is structured in three consecutive yet recursive layers, each corresponding to a distinct temporal and perceptual level. The project originates from a shift in my thinking while tracing the traces left by an escaped prisoner, Xu Hongci. Rather than attempting to reconstruct the course of events, the work focuses on how these traces are preserved, displaced, or rendered ineffective through media and time.
Some of the images in the work are drawn from photographs taken by Xu Hongci upon revisiting the site of forced labor following his posthumous rehabilitation. Here, photography and text, as primary means of retaining memory, reveal their inherent fragility, much like the park imagery obtained through my 3D scanning. These digital fragments simultaneously point to the technological reconstruction of space and the inherent fragmentation of memory itself.
Individual life experiences recede into the background, and the escape narrative no longer functions as the story’s primary subject. Instead, it serves as a trigger, allowing the imagery to move from specific events toward abstract temporal questions. Aerial footage in the film captures both expansive geological landscapes and close-range traces of memory. Fossils, salt lakes, deserts, and volcanic formations collectively highlight the transience and instability of human memory. Into the Rift does not seek to provide conclusions; rather, through the structure of the film itself, memory is made to collide across different media and temporal scales, continuously rewritten and continuously expanded.
