Into the Rift

Into the Rift is the final chapter of the series The Fugitive. Taking memory as its point of departure, the work brings together images, texts, and digital materials to reflect on how experience fractures and is reconfigured across different media and temporal scales.
The photographic archive in the film comes from photographs and written notes left by an escapee, Xu Hongci. In the 1990s, after being politically rehabilitated, he returned to the place where he had once been subjected to forced labor and took a series of photographs during this revisiting of former sites. Here, photography and writing, as media for preserving memory, reveal both their remarkable narrative power and their inherent fragility. This fragility echoes the park imagery generated through my LiDAR scans: although digitally recorded, the scene remains fragmented and incomplete, as if ironically illustrating the irrecoverable nature of our lived experience.
As the film unfolds, individual life experience gradually recedes into the background, while images and texts become triggers for a series of questions: How do we record past experiences? Can media serve as reliable grounds for witnessing? And once we realize that such fragile memories will eventually sink into time, how should we act?
Into the Rift therefore, resembles a kind of wandering. Carrying these questions, the film attempts to enter the fissure between time and memory, moving back and forth between historical narration and the far longer scale of geological time, while abandoning the desire to retrieve the truth.
