Extended Play

At Am Space Shanghai 2014

This exhibition origins from accumulated thoughts about some small scaled sculptures these years. Most of these art works came from fragments of experience from daily life, later they were processed by my improvisation. They carry my observation and way of perceiving an object. Due to the duration of time ,they gradually affected my work, and become the part of my life need not to be explicit about. The size is quite small, some of them do not even have concrete forms. They are purely improvised, uncertain; there is no specific opinions or wishes to be explained. These qualities form their characters, these characters form the whole exhibition.

Am: Under the glass cover are the photos seeming to be the materials which you have researched for this project, they also come from life. The artworks that you call them as ‘small sculptures’ seem to link with your photography and video work. These objects also played the part of prop in your other work. For example, from your photography series ‘Animal Farm’, till <Accident of Logic> which has been exhibited in am art space, as well as ‘Bird Nest’. What is your opinion on these small sculptures? Is that also the ‘extended play’ from your instinct?

Xu: Instinct signifies extemporaneous reaction not given by repeated and strict reflection. This reaction could satisfy a practical purpose and meanwhile contain a strong individual taste. You can also comprehend it as a de-intellectualized attitude of game.

Am: While arranging the exhibition, we have briefly talked about the speed and duration of creating an artwork, I would like to be more explicit on this question. For example, in many of your tiny and delicate artwork, apparently the making, or the conception an idea didn’t take long. But it seems that you are keeping adjusting and reflecting your ways of working...
What is the proportion of those speedy creations in all your artworks? How do you think of this kind of whimsy moment? Do speedy creations hold an equal importance as your work which have gone through deep, thorough thought?

Xu: I am just a lazy man with a long creating cycle. But ‘lazy’ status will keep me in an alert state in daily life, therefore, I am able to produce numerous fragmentary thoughts. During this period I gradually become aware of their importance through my introspection. They are small, exquisite and swift, and they make up the sensitivity that will gradually running off during the long-term project.
For me it is an attempt to regard instinct as the subject of a discussion. Actually I maintain a suspicious attitude equally towards the so-called instinct. No matter what the result will be, it is connected with knowledge and experience. Thus, instinct could be an attitude which refuses logical judgment but advocates voluntary choice. This attitude brings liberty and freshness, I try to enjoy possibilities that come with the attitude.

Am: Final display of this exhibition presents an extreme minimalism. Though there are numerous objects on the table, somehow they seem to unite and form harmony in the end; there are not any miscellaneous or trivial feeling. Including the huge screen opposite the table, main tone of the video is quite steady and organised. Can I attribute this to your view of art?

Xu: Perhaps I cannot give you a precise answer whether it is a ‘Yes’ or a ‘No’. My requirement for myself is prone to let each presentation become an experiment. I do not ask for a perfect result, instead I would like to try in various methods.
