The video work "Into the Slit " focuses on the relationship between image, text and memory. Some of the images in this work were selected from a trip down memory lane taken by former prison escapee Xu Hongci after his vindication and returned to the location of former labor camp. After finishing the collage work 'Picture Reading' with these images, I intertwine the video footage taken while following Xu's escape routes in 2019 with my own experience of past memories in 'Into the Slit '. In this work, the re-enactment of individual life experiences recedes into the background, and the interplay between words and images as a medium of memory recall becomes the main thread of the narrative. The images in the film documented the vast geological landscape and the traces of memory that are almost within reach. The text, written by Xu behind the pictures and narrated by me as the author, attempts to take the images out of perceptual awareness of memory issues. Once we confirm the irreconstructibility of memory, how to acknowledge the absence of historical narrative from the time dimension becomes another filmic thread.
